The Eastern
Sailplane Homebuilders Association Workshop 1999
will follow the VSA Symposium,
which will be held July 8th.
This year
the SHA Workshop will concentrate on "Testing done by the Sailplane Homebuilder".
Topics will include:
Testing:

Materials
(wood, metal, composites, etc. and quality control)

Designs (Prototype,
Modeling - computer/scale,
etc.)

Structural
-
Sources of
references materials
Flight:

panel discussion about the first flights

- Builder's
demonstration and reports
Speakers are
still being lined up, but already include the following: Dick Harrington
is speaking on "Using Models for Problem Solutions", talking about models
for solving mechanical problems, sizing, configuration studies and resolution
of construction techniques, in addition to flying models. Jim Marske
and Dave Hudnut will give a presentation on testing model spars in a testing
rig to compare wood vs. metal vs. carbon rod as materials for a spar designed
to a given load. Otto Zauner, the veteran builder- restorer from
New Jersey, will talk about testing carbon rod in the spar for a flying
wing he's been considering. Harris Jones will speak on his project.. Steve
Arndt will talk about his Carbon Dragon. Mat Redsell will bring one
of his gliders to display. Janice Armstrong and Jeff Byard will share
information about the Arvin Sierra Glider Port remembrance, which is scheduled
for April, 2000, and will show some historic slides of some exceptional
homebuilt gliders from the 1930's. Arvin was the western testing grounds
for new gliders on the west coast in 1937-1941 .
